Giveaway & Review: Mastermind Game by Pressman [CLOSED]

One of my favorite games as a child was the MASTERMIND board game by Pressman. I remember playing for hours with my sister one on one with the Advanced Version. She is four years my senior so she would always solve my codes more quickly than I could solve hers. Still, I always enjoyed myself, just as I did when I tried to solve different types of word puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. There are many more MASTERMIND game versions today than I remembered. In addition to the classic and the advanced versions, there are four additional MASTERMIND games . . . and all six are battery-free.

When I was presented with the opportunity to share MASTERMIND with my my 6yr old son, I was extremely excited. Although the game is recommended for children 8 and up, I felt confident that my son would understand the concept of the game. To put it simply, the "codemaker" creates a hidden code using the colored pegs and the "codebreaker" needs to solve the code based on feedback from the codemaker about the correct colors and placement of the pegs used in the codebreaker's guesses.

I am pleased to report that our 6yr old had no problems at all understanding the game. I did need to remind him what the little red and white pegs stood for the first few rounds, but he was able to remember after those practice rounds.

I like how this version of the game is self-contained. The cover for the code is hinged and does not fall off when it is bumped. It is great that all the pegs can be stored right inside the board.

My son much preferred to be the codemaker as I predicted he would. He thought he was being sneaky making the entire code one color. I was pretty proud of him for doing so well with this game and actually developing a strategy as the codemaker.

I was especially proud that my 6yr old did not resist trying to take on the role of the codebreaker. He actually broke my code in only six tries. It did make him very tired though and he was ready to be the codemaker again after that. It did take quite a bit of concentration on his part, which I think is great exercise for his brain.
