Giveaway & Review: Dreambox Learning Math Game [CLOSED]

Recently, Jake and I were invited to try out a new online math game for children grades K-2 called Dreambox Learning. This game has been featured in the New York Times and USA Today, so I was eager to have my 5yr old try his hand at it. After you read my thoughts on this game, you are cordially invited to sign up for a 14-day free trial for Dreambox Learning.

Here is what I like about Dreambox Learning:

1) It starts off with an activity that actually measures what level the game will start your child on.

2) The child can choose from many different characters to play.

3) While registering, the password is not a series of letters or numbers, the child only needs to pick a graphic. The next time they sign in, they only need to select the correct graphic to login successfully.

4) The instructions for the game are easy to understand and are given verbally, so there are no road blocks if your child has not mastered the art of reading yet.

5) The games are engaging and challenging. Each level targets a particular skill.

6) Dreambox Learning tracks your child's progress and emails progress reports to the parents. Here is a sample of one of the emails I have received . . .

"Congratulations! Jake successfully completed a group of DreamBox Learning lessons. In this group of lessons Jake learned to build amounts up to 10 making use of parts in relation to the whole amount. The counters available for his use were arranged in chunks of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10. As the lessons progressed Jake was encouraged to make use of the larger chunks, in particular the group of five. "

8) Once your child has reached a milestone, there is a certificate of achievement you can print out and present to him or her.

9) Each account can hold 4 different characters, so this would work out great for any household with more than one child.

One thing I absolutely encourage is not to allow your child to play on his or her own for too long. Since this game becomes increasingly difficult, it is easy for a child to become discouraged. I found that if I help Jake with the first few trials of a new level, that he can catch on and become more confident as the level progresses. Then he is ready to continue unassisted for awhile. Dreambox has a guide for when you should and should not offer help to your child because you want the child to attempt using their skills of logic to figure things out for themselves first. The game is also tracking your child's progress, so if he or she is getting too much help, then the activities will become more difficult too quickly.
