Silly Monkey Stories: Soup and Cereal

Recently, our 4.5yr old son Jake has become more interested in playing "house." He would assign the twins to be the mommy and daddy, which would leave him to be the baby. It wasn't until the play began that it became clear to me what Jake's perception of what a baby's behavior is like.

He started off crawling around on his hands and knees, but that was no surprise. Then he started pointing off to one side and saying "Soup!" Then he would point to the other side and say "Cereal!" He repeated this again and again and again. I'm not sure how long it lasted, but it seemed like at least a half an hour to me. LOL!

The reason why Jake was saying "soup" was because, before Luke started learning to say many words, he would point at everything and everyone and say what sounded like the word "soup." We never did figure out what Luke was actually trying to say. Jake was also saying the word "cereal" because that had been the most recent addition to Luke's vocabulary.

When I asked Jake if babies did anything else besides crawl around saying "soup" and "cereal," he told me that they suck their thumb and waddle when they walk. I suppose his depiction of a baby was accurate, but it still made me laugh.

Babies crawl and waddle!

"SOUP!!! . . . CEREAL!!!!!"
