Since several months ago, our 5 year old son has told us nightly, "I brushed my teeth, but nobody was watching me." He started doing this after he got caught lying about having brushed his teeth before bed one evening. After that, my husband and I naturally questioned him each time he told us that he brushed his teeth, but nobody was around to witness it. That's the price you pay for lying in the first place, right?
