What Foods Most Often Cause Food Poisoning?

Friday, October 14, 2011

My family has been pretty lucky in that we have rarely had any cases of food poisoning between the five of us.  We usually do not eat leftovers after they have been in the refrigerator for more than a day.  I was brought up to not waste food though, so I may have cooked eggs a day or two after they have expired or used baby spinach after the leaves had begun to wilt.  Well, according to the infographic below, it turns out that there are many things that can cause foods to be dangerous that are out of my control.  I did find, however, that am guilty of Mistake #5, although not very often.  Which food handling mistakes are you guilty of making?

  1. Cristina Said,

Not sure if I have ever experienced Food poisoning, but one time I thought I had. I went out for breakfast at McDonalds one morning with my mother and sister. There was a new breakfast sandwich that had steak. I love steak so I just had to order it. Couple hours after leaving there, me and my mother decided to walk to the store as it was only a few blocks from my sisters home. On the way I just felt sick all of the sudden and started throwing up all over the road. Embarrassing I know. Thought everyone that saw would think I was either drunk or pregnant. We made it to the store and got what we needed, and headed back. I got the worst headache ever. I did not even want to move my head. I just wanted to lay still. Every time I would move my head it hurt so bad, and I felt like I had to vomit. Felt so bad I had my fiance come pick me up as I was visiting my family from a few hours away. He showed up late that night and bought me some Alka Seltzer, which actually seemed to help, unless what was wrong was just wearing off. With mistake #3 I have actually been so busy I have let the meat thaw under hot water in the sink, still in the package. With mistake #4 I have always known that boiling will kill germs, and I think that is something everyone should know. Thanks so much for sharing.

  2. Thanks for sharing your experience Cristina! That definitely sounded like food poisoning to me since it started pretty quickly after you ate that sandwich. It just goes to show that, no matter how careful you are, you can still eat bad food.

  3. Food poisoning is a very common illness. You have shared excellent information to prevent it. Keep posting in future, too.
