Review: Despicable Me (DVD)

We just recently received a DVD copy of Despicable Me from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. I want to say before anything else this movie is charming and a lot of fun.

The main character is a super villain named Gru (played by Steve Carell) and is instantly likable. Although Gru and his minions adhere to every single movie villain cliche, the movie focuses on the other side of a super villains life. The movie highlights the every day life of a super villain living is a typical suburb. Universal did an outstanding job of taking the typical super villain and showing us a really interesting and fun alternate view. Freeze ray to bypass the coffee shop line anyone?

My 7 year old son was particularly taken by the slapstick nature of Gru's minions. They are cute and devilish and really take the fun of the movie to a higher level. The minions are the perfect blend of Umpa Loompas, evil minions, and the Three Stooges.

The DVD extras are short but interesting and they include fun add libbed interviews with the actors and producers that provide extra insight into the themes and story. Steve Carell is a riot and was perfectly cast as Gru.

I recommend Despicable Me with two thumbs way up (can I say that?). This movie is for all ages including the hardest to please adults. The humor is obvious enough for young viewers and there is enough subtle adult humor to make you laugh out loud.

Make Despicable Me your next choice for family movie night!  You can find this movie in a Blu-ray/DVD combo or a DVD at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and most other major movie retailers.
