Review: Disney's Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue (DVD)

On September 21st, Disney Studios Home Entertainment released the Blu-ray/DVD combo of Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, a highly anticipated release for Disney Fairies fans everywhere. This magical movie truly captivated all three of our children and really reinforced their ability to believe that fairies could actually exist right along with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. I love that this movie does this because I want our children to continue to believe in magic for as long as possible.

Believing in the possibility that things may exist even though we have not seen them is a special gift that most children possess, but many adults do not. A darling little girl named Lizzy (voice by Lauren Mote) gives this gift to her father with the help of Tinker Bell (Mae Whitman) and all her fairy friends. What child has not imagined what it would be like to have the ability to fly?

Another underlying theme in this movie is the true meaning of friendship and the acceptance of ones' friends, faults and all. This is a lesson that Vidia (Pamela Adlon) learned the hard way. Luckily this adventure ends on a happy note and all the fairies are reunited safely. The adventure that gets them to that point is not one to be missed.

This DVD comes with an unusually long list of bonus features. My family's favorite was "Cat Attack" which showed a hilarious deleted scene about Lizzy's robust cat. We also very much enjoyed the "Fairy Field Guide Builder" game, which asks trivia questions about the movie that anyone who was paying attention during the movie could answer.

Currently, you can find Disney's Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue on Blu-ray/DVD or DVD alone at the Disney Store and other major retailers of Disney movies. The digital download is also now available.

Thank you to Click-Communications for sending us a sample movie free of charge to base this review upon.

Review: My Teenage Were-Wolf by Lauren Kessler

When author Lauren Kessler’s teenage daughter, Lizzie, and she start to have problems due to Lizzie’s new-found adolescence, Lauren takes action. Instead of continuing to bicker and further destroy their relationship, Lauren immerses herself in Lizzie’s life. And we aren’t just talking about being a spectator. In My Teenage Werewolf: A Mother, A Daughter, A Journey Through the Thicket of Adolescence, for 18 months Lauren heroically (and patiently) sits in on Lizzie’s classes, attends her wrestling and track practices, follows her to summer camp and more. What she learns about Lizzie is invaluable and changes their relationship dynamic forever.

Kessler is the amazing author of several non-fiction narrative books, including Clever Girl and The Happy Bottom Riding Club. She is witty, clever, and turns non-fiction into a fun, enticing world. As a mother, I was thoroughly impressed with Kessler’s want and will to understand her daughter, instead of just “dealing” with her. I do not have a daughter, but for anyone that is raising a young woman, this is an excellent read. Even being the mother of boys, I can appreciate what Kessler did to gain an understanding of her “little girl”. I even noticed some parallels to Lizzie’s behavior and behaviors from my own adolescence.

My Teenage Werewolf retails for $25.95 in hardcover and can be found on Amazon.com and at other major local and online bookstores.

Thank you to Viking for sending us a sample copy of this book free of charge to base this review upon.

Silly Monkey Stories: A House of Cards

Something that is starting to develop around the dinner table is made up knock-knock jokes. I think it originated with my oldest recanting some jokes he had heard. But the cutest thing in the world is watching the twins try to do knock-knock jokes.

Luke will just start having no clue where he is going with it, the moment I say “who’s there?” I can see his eyes wildly darting about trying to find a visual queue as to what to say next, sometimes you can even guess.

But the cutest of all is when Makenzie attempts the classic Banana/Orange knock-knock we all grew up with. She has attempted it many times, but the majority goes like this:

Makenzie: “Baba, knock-knock!”
Me:
“Who’s there?”
Makenzie:
“Orange…er…Banana”
Me:
“Banana who?”
Makenzie:
“Orange!”

I always get a kick out of it, the expressions on their faces and the way you can see in their eyes the thought involved. They are always so proud when they are finished.

I have yet to get them to laugh at mine though…

Me: “Knock- knock”
Them:
“Who’s there?”
Me:
“Mickey Mouse”
Them:
“Mickey Mouse who?”
Me:
“MICKEY MOUSE IN HIS UNDERWEAR!”
Them:
“…sigh….oh Baba!”

Giveaway & Review: Rock N Learn Phonics DVDs - Volumes 1 and 2 (2 Winners) [CLOSED]

Recently we were sent Rock 'N Learn Phonics volumes one and two to try out and review. These two from the series are learning DVDs that target children over six years old. Practice is the key to reading and spelling success, and these educational DVDs definitely give children practice by repetition and music. The Rock 'N Learn set turns learning to read into fun, catchy little songs that kids love. I tried these out on all my daycare kids, but only the kindergartner and my 3 ½ year old (who is oddly interested in educational stuff) were interested. They loved the songs and the kindergartner loved it as a learning tool instead of sitting at a desk learning the “conventional” way. My son wanted to know if we had any more, which I will be looking into for him.

As a parent, I thought the graphics were cheesy, but that didn’t seem to bother the kids. It wasn’t at all annoying, like some children’s educational DVDs are and I found myself singing the songs later. Over all, I enjoyed these DVDs and even more so because they taught the kids something.

You can find Rock 'N Learn Phonics Volume 1 and 2 on their website, www.rocknlearn.com, and see some of their other fine products for all age groups. These DVDs retails for $19.99 each or both DVDs for $34.99.

Thank you to Rock 'N Learn for sending us a set of sample DVDs free of charge to base this review upon and for providing two additional sets of DVDs for our contest prize.

Stocking Stuffers 2010 Giveaway: The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! (DVD) [CLOSED]

My children have been longtime fans of The Cat in the Hat. So when they learned that PBS Kids recently added a new series to their line up called "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!" they were more than excited. This DVD The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: Wings and Things, which was released on September 7th of this year, was a huge hit with my children, especially my 6 year old son.

This 60-minute DVD features five stories. Luckily, my children had only seen two of these episodes on television. This particular DVD houses the following:

"Show Me the Honey"
"Migration Vacation"
"I Love the Nightlife"
"Oh Give Me a Home"
"Many Ants Make Light Work"

Each episode lasts about ten minutes and is packed full of information. In this one hour, my children learned about bees and how honey is made, why birds migrate South for the winter, which animals are nocturnal and which of their senses are heightened, how hermit crabs outgrow their shells, and how ants use teamwork to get things done. There is even a little bonus at the end about problem-solving.

If your children are good listeners, they will definitely enjoy this DVD. The Cat in the Hat has a lot to teach them. As I previously mentioned, my 6 year old son watched intently from beginning to end, but our 3 year old twins got antsy about halfway through. Although they were still half-watching, they had to get up and take out some toys to play with.

Currently, you can purchase this Cat in the Hat DVD for $11.99 on NCircleEntertainment.com and from other major retailers of children's DVDs.

Thank you to NCircle Entertainment for sending us a sample DVD free of charge to base this review upon and for providing a second DVD for our contest prize.

Moms Gather for a Kellogg's "Love Your Cereal" Breakfast

Last Saturday, a group of local moms gathered together to enjoy a little breakfast and some honest conversation about breakfast routines in their busy households. A good friend of mine was nice enough to open her home to these moms for this special event. I acted as the liaison between these moms, all with children of varying ages, and Kellogg's. Since the launch of their informational website LoveYourCereal.com, Kellogg's has made it their goal to clarify what are facts and what are myths about children's breakfast cereals.

The guests were served three different varieties of Kellogg's Brand cereal along with fresh blueberries, strawberries, yogurt, two types of juice, milk, coffee, and tea.

In addition to the above, the guests were offered two easy to make treats made from Kellogg's cereals . . . Dark Chocolate Pretzel Treats made from Rice Krispies and Chocolate-Dipped Almond Toast made from Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Apple Jacks.

After everyone got ready to sit down to enjoy breakfast, all the moms chatted about how crazy things have been since school began . . . from breakfast to the unpredictable school bus schedules.

Then we were joined by the Kellogg Company's Senior Brand Manager via Skype, who engaged this group of moms in an enlightening conversation about the nutritional and economic value of breakfast cereal.

The video below gives a sample of the dialog which took place between these real moms and the Kellogg's Senior Brand Manager . . .

Some of the surprising facts we learned:
  • Children's breakfast cereal only comprises 5% of the average child's daily sugar intake.
  • In general, children and adults who eat breakfast cereal have a healthier body weight.
  • On average, the cost of one bowl of cereal served with milk is approximately 50 cents.
  • Kellogg's is the company behind Kashi.
  • Several varieties of Kellogg's children's cereal contains added fiber along with other nutrients.

To learn more about the studies and sources behind these facts, visit LoveYourCereal.com .

This event was part of a paid campaign for TheMotherhood.com on behalf of the Kellogg's Brand Company, who was nice enough to provide the goodie bags of swag and informational booklets for our guests to take home.

Easy Recipe: Chocolate-Dipped Almond Toast (Fall Colors)

I recently had the challenge of coming up with a recipe using breakfast cereal. You know me . . . if it is not easy to make, then it is unlikely that I will make it. So I came up with these tasty treats that anyone can make. All you need is a mallet, a microwave, and some wax paper. I chose Kellogg's Apple Jacks and Frosted Flakes cereals to use in this recipe because I thought the colors would be great for Fall. For a colorful confetti look for a children's party, you could use Froot Loops or for Christmas colors, you could use just the red and green Fruit Loops pieces. I do want to point out that the oat cereal does not remain crunchy in the final product, but the flakes do.

Recipe: Chocolate-Dipped Almond Toast (Fall Colors)

INGREDIENTS:
Stella D'Oro Almond Toast (approximately 18)
8oz Dolci frutta microwavable chocolate
2 cups Kellogg's Frosted Flakes or Apple Jacks cereal

Step 1: Pour the breakfast cereal into food safe storage bag. Lay the bag flat on a cutting board. Hold the opening closed with one hand. Use a mallet to break the cereal into crumbs-size pieces. Pour the crumbs into a flat-bottomed bowl.

Step 2: Microwave the chocolate, following the instructions on the package. Be sure not to overheat the chocolate.

Step 3: Tip the container of melted chocolate slightly and dip one end of an Almond Toast into the chocolate, covering the entire tip on all four sides. Then press the chocolate-covered portion of the toast into the cereal crumbs, coating the entire tip and all four sides with crumbs. Place on a sheet of wax paper to harden.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 with the remaining Almond Toast.

Once chocolate has completely hardened, store at room temperature in an airtight container.

Easy Recipe: Dark Chocolate Pretzel Treats

Recently, I took part in a challenge to create a Rice Krispies Treats recipe especially for back-to-school. One of my original ideas for a salty-sweet tasting treat was to use chocolate-covered pretzels instead of the chocolate covered peanuts I ended up with. I chose the dark chocolate variety of chocolate-covered pretzels because I thought milk chocolate might be too sweet in conjunction with all that marshmallow. There are many other kinds of chocolate-covered pretzels you can try in place of the dark chocolate, if you like to experiment.

Recipe: Dark Chocolate Pretzel Treats

INGREDIENTS:
3 Tbsp butter or margarine
10oz package of white mini marshmallows
4oz bag of Dark Chocolate Flipz (chocolate-covered pretzels)

Step 1. Lay opened bag of chocolate-covered pretzels flat on a cutting board. While holding the opening shut with your hand, use a mallet to break the pretzels into small pieces while still inside the package.

Step 2. In a large saucepan or skillet, melt the butter or margarine over low heat.

Step 3. Add mini marshmallows and stir continuously until completely melted and blended with butter.

Step 4. Add Rice Krispies cereal and then the chocolate-covered pretzels.

Step 5. Remove the pan from heat. Then stir until the cereal and the pretzels are completely coated with the melted marshmallow.

Step 6. Transfer entire mixture into a 13" x 9" baking pan, casserole dish, or plastic storage container coated with nonstick cooking or baking spray.

Step 7. Using a folded piece of wax paper, press the mixture into the pan, packing it as evenly and tightly as possible.

Step 8. Allow the pan of Rice Krispies Treats to cool completely before cutting into 2" squares.

Store your treats in an airtight container. It is best if they are consumed within 2 days or so.
