Ruby Tuesday: Strawberry Goodness

This photo was taken at a catered event I had attended last week. All the mini desserts looked so elegant. I actually went for the key lime, but could not resist taking a photo of this one, which contained mouthwatering strawberries. It took all my willpower not to consume both the key lime cup and this one.

Which one would you have chosen?

Giveaway & Review: "By Baby" Ceramic Hand & Foot Impression Keepsakes [CLOSED]

TWINtuitive Product #25

I chose these hand print keepsakes by By Baby to feature as a "TWINtuitive Product" because, although these By Baby baby handprint kits would be an ideal gift for any parents or parents-to-be, I think a Sibling Print Keepsake would be especially meaningful to parents of multiples. Since hand prints are unique, these impressions truly show that each twin or multiple is their own special little person.

Ordering your keepsake is a 4-step process . . . choose your keepsake, order your baby handprint kit, make and return your impressions, and then wait for your personalized keepsake to arrive. It takes about 8 weeks for the final product to arrive, but it is well worth the wait.

What I thought about our By Baby experience:

1) I thought the kit was presented very nicely and definitely came ready-to-wrap if it had been intended to be used as a gift.

2) Taking the imprints and packing them to return to ByBaby.com safely was not difficult, but it was slightly stressful. You had to place the softened Play-Doh on the provided cardboard rectangle, roll it until it was smooth and the right thickness, and then have your child make an impression that was as deep as possible. Depending on your child's ability to not wiggle his or her fingers, this can be a quick process or you may have to make several attempts. It is also not easy to make a deep impression with a small child's hand because you need to push that little hand into the Play-Doh without hurting the child, since he or she does not have the strength to do it themselves.

3) To pack the imprints so that they traveled safely, the kit included a Ziploc bag, pieces of egg-crate foam, and additional cardboard pieces. I had doubts that the soft imprints were going to survive the trip, but I am happy to report that they did!

4) Something you should note is that the return shipping is not included in the price of the product. If you are giving a kit as a gift, you should probably include some cash for the cost of the shipping in an envelope and slip it into the box.

5) Along with the impressions, you will need to choose the color of the the glaze on the imprints, the color of the glaze on the writing, and a ribbon color. There were many colors to choose from for both the glaze and the ribbon. Since my imprints were of both boys and girls, it took me forever to choose. It really helped to look at the galleries within each section of By Baby products to see if there is a color combination shown that stood out to me. You can also upgrade to add dots, stripes, additional text, or additional impressions to your design.

6) I know the hand impressions all arrived safely because, when we received our ceramic keepsake, our three children put their hands right into the glazed hand prints and they matched up perfectly.

7) The plaque itself is extremely heavy, so I was glad to see that the ribbon was extra wide and was strung right through pre-made holes in the plaque. The portion of the ribbon that was tied in a bow is tied in a way that makes it extremely secure, so I had no worries about hanging this weighty plaque up on the wall on a screw.

By Baby products are not limited to just hand and foot impressions on glazed ceramic plaques, but also include impression garden stones, personalized name or word glazed plaques, personalized bow holders and picture holders, paw print plaques for pets, and more. Visit ByBaby.com to view their full line of products.

Thank you to By Baby for sending us a sample kit and plaque free of charge to base this review upon and for providing a gift certificate as the prize for this contest.

My Photos (W/E 5-29-10)

A few days ago, we had extremely hot weather that was unusual for springtime in New England. The temperature was well into the 90s. It was the perfect excuse to break out the water table and the Super Soakers . . . the absolute perfect excuse to take some outdoor photos.

Tips For a Healthier Cleaner Home

Three out of the five members of our household suffer from allergies caused by airborne allergens. My mother says we simply need to keep the house clean from top to bottom all the time. Easier said than done, right?

I find it helpful to use whatever tools technology offers to help keep the house free of mold, bacteria, dust mites, pollen, and more. We use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and I use a UV-C air purifier in our bedroom. Other tools you can use are filters, such as Filtrete air filtration products, for your forced-air heat or cooling systems. I have noticed an increase in allergy symptoms the few times we have had to use our air conditioner this spring, so I am going to look into replacing our air conditioner filters.

Here are some tips from Laura Dellutri, the author of The Overworked Mom’s Stress Free Home Keeping, to help you clean your home in an organized manner. This list is designed to help you to avoid overlooking some important areas.

Start at the Top: Ceiling fans, tall mantles and bookshelves, and the tops of door frames tend to subscribe to the “out of sight, out of mind” motto. These areas often harbor dust, so it’s important to wipe them down regularly to help remove dust buildup. Start at the top and work your way down, collecting all of the dust and dirt that falls to the floor while you’re cleaning.

Wipe Down Windows and Walls: Don't clean windows the old fashioned way – newspaper can cause ink residue and paper towels leave lint behind. Your best bet is to use microfiber cleaning cloths and a professional window squeegee to get a streak-free, spotless shine. To prevent streaks on shower doors and walls, apply lemon oil to the door twice a month. This will help repel soap scum and shampoo, while also adding a nice shine.

Think Horizontally: Dust mites are nearly everywhere. In fact, the American Lung Association estimates that roughly four out of five homes in the United States have detectable levels of dust mite allergen in at least one bed. Reduce dust mites by encasing your mattress and pillows, and wash your bedding in hot water about once a week. Also, since dust mites are microscopic, place strips of duct tape on the mattress case to prevent the dust mites from sneaking through.

Clean the In-between: While cleaning what you can see, don’t forget to clean what you can’t see – the air you breathe. Use a high performance air filter in the home, such as the Filtrete 1” Ultimate Allergen Reduction filter from 3M, to help capture particles such as pollen, smoke, dust mite debris and pet dander from the air that passes through the filter. Be sure to change your filter at the start of every season, or every three months.

Freeze the Fur: Stuffed animals can harbor dust mites so it’s important to pay special attention to them. Place stuffed animals in a large plastic bag and freeze them for four to five hours. Remove them from the freezer and plastic bag, and use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to remove any leftover dust particles.

Finish With Floors: To keep floors in tip-top shape, vacuum and clean them weekly. You can easily make your own floor cleaner by adding a few drops of mild liquid dish detergent to a gallon of water. Hot water can break down floor finishes after time so use water that is barely warm. Finally, don’t forget to clean the floor under large pieces of furniture, which may require you to temporarily move them elsewhere. Corners of rooms and the back of closets often are overlooked, so be sure to clean these areas as well.

Trashcans: Trashcans should be cleaned monthly using a chlorine bleach and water solution. Simply combine one cup of non-chlorine bleach for every three gallons of water and pour the solution into the trashcan. Swish the solution around in the trashcan, and wait about five minutes for the chlorine to kick in and kill the germs.

Refrigerators: Cleaning the refrigerator monthly will improve the safety and quality of your food. If you are tired of cleaning spills and food particles from your refrigerator, then cover shelves with washable shelf liners. They will catch most of the food spillage, and will make cleanup quicker and easier. Once a month, throw them in the dishwasher for a good cleaning, and then place them back in the refrigerator once they are dry.

Sinks: Since bacteria can accumulate in cracks and crevices, pay extra attention to these areas when disinfecting. Also, stainless steel sinks can be tough to clean and can look spotty due to water spots and lime build up. To keep the sink shiny, use a soft buffing wheel to restore the luster. Then, use a cloth to generously apply mineral oil to the sink. Water will bead up and roll off the sink, keeping it shiny and helping prevent spots.

You can sign-up for the Filtrete newsletter, which sends tips for keeping your house cleaner throughout the year right to your inbox. There is also a free service that sends you an email reminder to change your filters. Click on the following link to receive a printable mail-in-rebate good for $4 off Filtrete Air Cleaning Filters. You can find Filtrete products at major retailers, such as Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Target, and Amazon.com .

Favorite Uncle's Birthday Dinner

This evening we had the pleasure of eating out with my parents, sister, and brother-in-law. The occasion was my BIL's birthday. It's actually not until next week, but this was the most convenient time for everyone to come together.

My BIL is our children's favorite uncle. Each of them even took a turn sitting next to him at dinner, which was delicious, by the way. There was good food, the sound of children laughing, and birthday cake!

Here are some of my favorite photos taken during dinner . . .

Review: Uncle Ben's Whole Grain White Rice

Aside from fruit, my children seem to have a built-in radar to warn them against any foods that are healthy. Over the past year or so General Mills began to make all their cereals whole grain with less sugar and my children did not notice the difference. Uncle Ben's succeeded in the same way with their better-for-you Whole Grain White Rice.

White rice is one of the few things that my children do not complain about eating during meals. One of the easiest meals that always pleases our 6yr old son is Chicken Piccata and white rice. It is great if you are short on time, but still want to serve something hot and wholesome.

The easy meal below just consists of Michael Angelo's Chicken Piccata (from BJ's Wholesale Club) and Uncle Ben's Whole Grain White Rice. Just prepare each separately per the package instructions and plate it like this or you can cut the chicken into smaller pieces and mix it into the rice for younger children.

When we made the switch from our regular white rice to the whole grain white rice from Uncle Ben's, my son did not notice the difference. He ate every bite as usual.

Uncle Ben's new Whole Grain White Rice comes in both plain long grain and flavored varieties, such as Chicken, Broccoli Cheddar, Sweet Tomato, and Taco Style. For recipes using these and other Uncle Ben's products, visit Uncle Ben's Recipes & More.

Boston's Mom Central Aquafina FlavorSplash Event

On May 27th, a small group of Massachusetts bloggers convened in the home of Stacy Debroff, founder and CEO of Mom Central, a consulting team based in Newton, MA known for their successful marketing campaigns targeting moms. This evening, we were invited to enjoy good food and conversation accompanied by the 6 delicious flavors of Aquafina FlavorSplash.

I very much enjoyed meeting Stacy and the entire Mom Central staff. There are many I have communicated with via email a hundred times over the past year or so. It was nice to be able to meet them face to face. I was also happy to reconnect with some bloggers I have met once or twice in the past, as well as meeting the authors of some great blogs that were unknown to me until last night.

From Left: Janice (Meal Makeover Moms), Stacy (Mom Central CEO, The DeBroff DeBrief), Liz (Meal Makeover Moms)

Members of the Mom Central team went through great efforts to pull off a successful evening. They even offered a raffle and planned a trivia game for our enjoyment. We split up into 3 teams. Luckily two of the teams each had a knowledgeable food blogger on their side because the topic was fruit!

The Winning Team! From Left: Keri (Toy Queen), Jill (The Daily Grind of a Work at Home Mom), Janice (Meal Makeover Moms)

Liz of Meal Makeover Moms won a Zoku Quick Pop Maker, which is just about the "coolest" invention I have seen in awhile (pun intended). Although I was totally jealous, I am so glad that Liz won. I can only imagine the wonderful things she will come up with to make using her Zoku.

Did I mention that this event was catered? Yes, my husband would be so sad if he saw all the delicious food we were served. Sorry, Honey, maybe next time.

Enjoying dessert and Aquafina FlavorSplash! From Left: Niri (Mommy Niri) and Nicole (Good Golly Miss Blondie)

Thank you to Mom Central, Aquafina, and the DeBroff Family for making it possible for local bloggers to come together when we might not have otherwise. I am so happy to have more business cards to add to my stash solely devoted to Massachusetts bloggers.

I wrote this post after attending an event sponsored by Aquafina FlavorSplash and Mom Central. I received FlavorSplash goodies and a gift card as a thank you for posting.

Giveaway: Motor Oil Matters (Jiffy Lube GC) [CLOSED]

Since more than 50% of the customers who take their cars in to be serviced are women, I wanted to bring this informative website called Motor Oil Matters to the attention of my readers. I am one of those people who never bothered to learn how a motor works or how it is put together, but that does not mean I do not want to maximize the performance and life of our car.

To warm up, you can play the M.O.M. Knows Best trivia game. It is a fun way to test your knowledge. I won't tell you my score, but I definitely needed to visit the Motor Oil Matters facts page afterwards. I have to say that it succeeded in answering most of my questions about motor oil in short concise easy-to-understand answers.

Giveaway & Review: HALLS Cough Drops For Allergy Symptom Relief [CLOSED]

Although there is nothing funny about suffering from allergies, I always joke that I should own stock in HALLS because I rely on them so much for allergy relief all year round. A little over a year ago, I began to experience asthma-like symptoms. I would have a chronic cough, which caused me to wheeze and have shortness of breath, several weeks at a time. I truly thought I had caught pneumonia, but the doctor said it was just allergies. Luckily I do not have asthma, but unluckily I do experience some of its symptoms.

There are only a handful of things that help open my airway and relieve my violent coughing almost immediately. One thing is Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream. I've tried other brands of ice cream and they did not work. Another thing is an inhaler prescribed by my doctor. I stopped using it because it only stopped my cough for a period of two seconds. After that brief moment of relief, I would start hacking and wheezing again. HALLS is something I've learned to keep on hand because it actually is an oral anesthetic. It helps my throat to stop feeling so closed up and allows me to catch my breath. The menthol really helps with that as well. I keep it in my desk drawer and in my purse at all times.

The most effective variety of HALLS for me is the Honey-Lemon. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in the large bags, so we always pick up the bag of Cherry HALLS, which contains 80 drops.

You are invited to visit HALLS on Facebook to sign up for savings on HALLS products. You can also visit GetHalls.com to see which HALLS product is the right one for your particular allergy symptoms.

Thank you to HALLS for sending us cough drop samples free of charge to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prize.
