Pardon the Dust . . . Installing a New Template Today!

Because of recent changes implemented by Blogger to limit the amount of html each page is allowed to show, my blog template is no longer functional for my readers. Also, I refuse to limit the number of photos I can share of my family and the products I review. There are two main problems I am trying to solve . . .

1) When my readers click on the various categories in the drop-down menus, Blogger no longer shows all the posts in that category because of the html limit. This keeps my readers from having access to the majority of my previous posts.

2) The number of posts that show on the front page changes all the time depending on how much html is contained in my most recent posts. The yo-yo-ing of my main column's length is not something I care for very much. Plus it looks very strange to have two columns of mini-posts with an odd number of posts showing, which is sometimes the case due to this html limit Blogger has imposed on us.

I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this blog redesign may cause my readers. This is my last effort before I am forced to switch to WordPress. Hopefully, the access to my posts will be normal for most of the day and you will only have to put up with cosmetic changes and shifting of elements on my sidebars.

Thank you for visiting my blog and hopefully these changes will make my site user-friendly again.

Our 6yr Old is Now a Green Belt in TKD

Our 6yr old son has officially retired his yellow belt in taekwon do. He now has a green belt, which is technically a "recommended" green belt. If I understand correctly, if you are under a certain age, you can only earn a green belt with a black stripe that runs lengthwise.

Jake was so excited the evening before his promotion. He has had his yellow belt for over a year and, although he has earned stripes on it, he was ready to hang it up on his belt rack above his white belt.

The event was not really a test, but rather an opportunity for all the students to show their families what they can do. Only students who have already proven themselves to qualify for a promotion are invited to the event.

After doing some basic moves as a large group, the students were broken up into smaller groups by age to show off their offensive moves.

Jake broke his first 3/4" thick by 5" deep board. I know he was nervous about doing that. My husband and I are so proud that he made the attempt and were so very thrilled for him that he was successful.

After that they called up groups of students, depending on which promotion they were receiving, to do their patterns. Only one other student in this age group was going for his green belt.

Here is the proud moment where one of the instructors presents Jake with his new green belt. I took so many photos during the event that my camera battery almost ran out of charge. Luckily, it still had a little life left in it.

After the ceremony, we took Jake to Friendly's to have a celebratory lunch and ice cream. He said that he chose mint chocolate chip ice cream for his sundae because it was green to match his belt.

My Photos (W/E 2-27-10)

Here are some of my favorite photos from last week. I'll have more to share in another post because our 6yr old got promoted from a yellow belt to a green belt in taekwon do on Saturday.

Review: "Ball Claw" Ball Storage System

When you have three young children, almost everything is a process, including getting everyone ready to go outside to play. After a round of socks, shoes, sunglasses, sun hats, and sunscreen, there is still gear to gather. Anyway to make our children more self-sufficient is a step in the right direction. That's where the Ball Claw comes in.

This simple invention allows us to store balls of all different types off the floor on free wall space. Currently, the Ball Claw comes in three sizes . . . one for regulation size basketballs, one for soccer and volleyballs or youth basketballs, and one for youth to regulation size footballs or smaller playground type balls.

What we thought about our Ball Claws:

1) They were easy to install. The Ball Claws just screw into the wall and comes with a circular cover bearing the Ball Claw logo to cover the screw.

2) Before I saw these in person, I thought that the claws would be on a spring and I was worried about whether a young child would be able to insert and remove a ball easily. That is not the case at all. The whole Ball Claw is plastic and there are no springs. The claws are ever-so-slightly flexible. Our 3yr olds had no problems using this product at all.

3) I was pretty happy that we were able to make use of vacant wall space. We put our Ball Claws in a row about 2 feet off the floor right under our row of coat hooks.

4) This product is much more user-friendly for younger children than other types of ball storage, such as drawstring mesh bags and deep bins.

If you tend to look for products that are made in the U.S.A. then you have just found another one. At $11.99 each, I think the Ball Claw is reasonably priced, considering how much use a household like mine would get out of them. I also think this product would be exceptionally useful in a school, a gym, or a youth center.

Thank you to BallClaw.com for sending us sample Ball Claws free of charge to base this review upon.

Review: PCI Post Diagnostics Test Card

Recently, a website called Budget Gadgets that sells tech items for extremely low prices was brought to my attention. I was very curious to try out some of these items, as I was skeptical about how well their products would perform at such amazing prices. One of the items I received to review was a Motherboard Diagnostic Card Tester. Since we have multiple PCs in our household, this certainly is a handy gadget to have around.

What my husband and I thought about this PCI Post Diagnostics Test Card:

1) This product may not be for you if you do not have at least some experience with using such test cards. The reason is because there is no documentation included. There are no instructions, no list translating the code results, no mention of a manufacturer, and no troubleshooting tips. However, all this information can be found online through search engines if you know what to look for, as long as you know what bios your computer has.

2) The display extension is long, which is very convenient. The digital display on the extension is adjustable in that you can change the view depending on which way it is positioned relative to you.

3) The card appears to have a power supply test indicator via 8 LEDs, but this indicator is not on the extended display.

4) The card always shows the last code, but you are able to cycle back to look through the previous codes.

5) The digital display on both the card and the extended display are large, bright, and easy to read in most lighting situations.

6) The cost of this card is just $8.35. The low price outweighs the inconvenience of having to look for the code results online. This product does the job and that is the important thing. This card would be great for any PC repair business or school because the cost goes down as the quantity you purchase goes up.

BudgetGadgets.com offers Free Shipping Worldwide. For a limited time, you can receive an additional 5% off the already low prices when you use CODE: KM5OFF10 at checkout.

Thank you to Budget Gadgets for sending us a sample diagnostics test card free of charge to base this review upon.

For Better or For Worse: Time to Call in the Authorities

It has been an ongoing battle with our children to get them to eat their dinners. Some nights we are tired of fighting and opt for the most kid-friendly foods we have in the house.

That's what we did last night. What child could turn down Mac 'n' Cheese and tater tots, right? Well, all our children did was pick at their food and only took a few bites. That's when my husband decided it was time to call in the authorities.

He made a call to the Mac 'n' Cheese police. The twins actually could not have cared less, but my husband did have our 6yr old going for half a second. You have to give him an "A" for creativity, right?

Giveaway & Review: Fandangling Ceiling Fan Decor [CLOSED]

I've always thought ceiling fans were an unsightly necessity, especially if you do not have central air. I think the designers on Trading Spaces had drilled that fact into my brain. I actually have yet to see an attractive ceiling fan. The best you can hope for is one that blends into the ceiling and does not draw too much attention to itself.

Well a mom-created product called Fandangling has set out to prove me wrong. Fandangling offers a kit, which contains 5 plush themed ornaments that hang from your ceiling fan blades.

I chose a set of butterflies because I thought they would look pretty twirling around in the air. Since my daughter is 3yrs old, these would be used for decor purposes rather than entertainment. If I had an infant, I would have selected a kit that had a variety of different animals or objects.

The Fandangling kit comes with 5 plush ornaments, each of which are attached to a Velcro square with a ribbon. There are also ten self-adhesive Velcro squares to attach to the top of your fan blades. Five are to use right away and the other five can be saved to use on another fan.

The installment was extremely easy, especially if you have a tall husband with long arms who can reach the top of the fan blades without a stepstool. The butterflies were extremely lightweight and did not affect the performance of the fan at all. If you are using the Fandangling for a mobile effect, I would recommend putting the fan on the slowest setting. When turned up one notch, the butterflies are moving too fast to enjoy. For this reason, I would remove the butterflies when the hot and humid weather arrives, so that we can use the fan on the highest setting.

Our ceiling fan only has four blades, so we put the fifth butterfly in the center. It doesn't float like the other ones, but it does rotate. I have to admit that these ornaments do add some fun to the ceiling fan. I would recommend Fandangling for bedrooms of infants all the way up to tweens. They would also be great for playrooms.

Even though my children are too old to be entertained by Fandangling, there is someone in our house who is not . . .

Fandangling is available to be purchased online only at Fandangling.com for $19.95 plus $3 shipping to anywhere in the United States. Currently there are 13 different themed kits to choose from. Fandangling donates 10% of all proceeds to charity. The current charities they are partnering with are Build, Animal Friends, and ACEP.

For a limited time, you can save 20% off your Fandangling order by using CODE: FANDANGLING10 at checkout. To stay up-to-date with new products and promotions, visit Fandangling on Twitter and Fandangling on Facebook.

Creating With Colors: How to Make Allowance Money Cups (Free Printables)

Since the beginning of 2010, I have had several opportunities present themselves to review products or books revolving around the subject of children and money. I suppose it is a reflection of the tough economy and our generation wanting the next to be more prepared for economic downturns.

We just officially started giving our 6yr old an allowance last week. To prepare for this, I took what I learned from the Money Savvy Pig and the Three Cups storybook and I put together this easy project. The main concept is for your child to divide any incoming money into categories.

Today's Project: Allowance Money Cups

Ask you child to decorate 3 labels to go around each of 3 containers using markers and color pencils. While decorating the labels, your child should draw or write the names of items or people he or she relates to each category (Spend, Save, and Donate).

Supplies Needed:

1) Three clean 74-gram Pringles Potato Crisp containers (Can be substituted with any cylindrical container the same size or larger)
2) Print out one each of the three labels (I have also included blank labels for you to create your own categories)
4) White all-purpose glue
5) Age-appropriate scissors

Step 1: Rinse, clean, and completely dry the inside of your three Pringles containers.

Tip #1: You can use any set of 3 cylindrical containers that are the same size as these Pringles containers or larger. If you are using larger size containers, you will just need to cover the outside of the container with construction paper or wrapping paper (solid or printed) prior to gluing these labels on.

Step 2: Print out each of the three categorized labels below. You can do so by clicking on the image to enlarge, right-clicking on the enlarged image, and then selecting "Print".

Tip #2: There is a blank label available. You can use this one to make up your own categories, such has investing, Christmas fund, video games, etc . . .

Step 3: Have your child start with the "Spend" label because it will be the easiest. Then ask him or her to think of things they would like to spend their money on. When your child has come up with four things, ask him or her to draw the items, people, or places in the four empty rectangles with thin markers and then color in the objects and background with color pencils. (My son's drawings were of Legos, toy cars, a crafts studio he like to go to, and Wii games.)

Tip #3: I had my son write what each picture represents because it will help others decipher the drawings who may be looking at them for the first time and also it is a good way to practice his handwriting and spelling skills.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 with the "Save" and "Donate" labels. (For "Save" my son portrayed a dog, a car, a Disney vacation, and college. For "Donate" he thought of abused children, animal shelters, the homeless, and adopting a family at Christmas time.)

Step 5: Cut out the labels along the outer black lines while leaving about an inch of blank white on one end. That extra white part will be where the label overlaps with itself after being wrapped around the container. The cleaner the lines are, the better your labels will look, so you may want to assist younger children with cutting out the labels.

Tip #4: The labels I designed are made to fit exactly around these Pringles containers. If you are using a larger container, you can cut the label out around the thick black line on all four sides without leaving extra paper for overlapping.

Step 6: On the backside of the first label, put a bead of white glue along the edge of the end that contains the extra white paper. Then carefully position that end onto the container, making sure that the label will wrap around smoothly. Then put a bead of glue on the backside at the tail end of the label. Wrap the label around the container and secure the end.

Step 7: Repeat Step 6 with the other two labels.

Here are how my son's money cups turned out . . .

I also want to share how we have decided to divide our 6yr old's allowance between the three cups. His allowance is $5 per week as long as he does his chores. 10% ($0.50) goes into the Donate cup each week. 20% ($1.00) goes into the Save cup, which can be used later on to start a checking account or a college fund. The remaining $3.50 goes into his Spend cup. We try to use the same percentages for any incoming money, such as cash he has received for his birthday and other special occasions.

Thank you to Discount School Supply for sending us markers and crayons free of charge to use for our Creating With Colors projects.
