There's nothing like discovering a new book together with our children. The right picture storybook will hold both our 3yr old twins' and our 6yr old son's attention from beginning to end. Of course not all books can do that, but we just found another one that can.

I'm Up in a Tree is written and illustrated by author and father Mark Alden Johnson. This book revolves around a young boy's struggle between following the advice of others and what his own instincts tell him. A secondary theme is the concept of unconditional love towards a child from a parent and the doubts about that love a child experiences when the child realizes that he or she has made an error in judgement. This book reminds parents to reassure their children about that unconditional love every chance they get.

One of the charming things about this book is that it is written in a rhyme that has a similar rhythm to Dr. Seuss (except this book is less silly, easier to understand, and easier to read). The animals that make their appearance to give this boy advice add magic to this story because they are able to speak to him and he is able to understand. Something I liked very much is that the book teaches younger readers to see the differences between two things, in this case it was the differences between a little boy and three types of animals.

I was raised by a single mom and she was always very strict about everything. I was afraid to tell her anything I did wrong! Whether I had broken something or spilled something, either by accident or carelessness, I was terrified to tell my mother because I would most definitely get hit. Now with my children, I'm the opposite. I pretty much let them get away with anything. ;-)

main entry; I was one of 3 girls & I was the middle child so I felt like my baby sister got away with anything & my older sister got to slack because her & mom got along better since she was older so I guess I did hide the fact of things I would break or misplace at times, but one thing stands out most in my memory that I tried to hide but they soom found out and I had to use my allowance to pay for it and that was the screen on my bedroom window, my bed was closet to the one of two windows and my boyfriend then (now my husband of 33yrs) just lived 2 houses over and I could see his house from my window and in the summer I would sit there hoping to get a glimps of him on his motorcycle and would put his name into the screen with a pencil and when they discovered it I was in trouble and no money to spend for awhile on 45 records which really bummed me out, thanks my grandson would like this book to read

I remember one major thing I did that I was afraid to tell my parents about. I was in elementary school and I got in a fight (a real fight) with a boy b/c he told me that girls couldn't play on the playground. He blacked my eye a little, but I put him on the ground. When I went home I told my parents I fell (I'm really clumsy anyway) and hit my face on the playground. I doubt they believed me, but they didn't seem too concerned seeing as I am really accident prone. Thanks for the chance!
